If you want to experience a little bit more of the Carioca lifestyle and not just have a touristy life while in Rio de Janeiro, think of having a nice breakfast in one of the traditional or more hipster Caffes in the Zona Sul instead of being confined to your hotel breakfast buffet. Meeting for a nice breakfast on the weekend is a must for the Ipanema/Leblon crowd, not only reserved for the twenty something year olds but for the grown up couples and complete happy families. There are plenty of options to suit each taste, reason and age: whether it is an early booster with the paper or magazine on hand or a brunch filled with chit chatting. These are my Top 4 Breakfast Caffes:
- Talho Capixaba in Leblon:
This is a gourmet shop filled with delicatessen from Brazil and a variety of countries with an in-house bakery spreading lovely aromas indoors and a busy caffe/restaurant offering possibilities of sitting indoors or outdoors. It is very frequented by locals and no matter the time you go during the weekend, it is always busy (probably less at very early hours). I love this place. Eating quality croissants or patisserie-like sweets is difficult in Rio de Janeiro where the breakfast culture has more of fresh fruits and white breads. In Talho Capixaba there are are breakfast combinations made already or you can make your own: choose a fresh juice, some hot drink maybe, a baked sweet or some eggs on a nice bread even gluten-free, you choose! My favorite is the wide focaccia sandwich option range! They are delicious!! I would dare to say, they are the best in town!
Address: Av. Ataulfo de Paiva 1022. Leblon.
- Cafeina Cafe in Ipanema:
This caffe offers breakfast, lunch and sweets (and they do home delivery!). You can go for either a set breakfast menu or choose a la carte: bakery, pancakes, cereals, wide bread selection, different type of eggs…you will definitely find something you like there! the warm nuttella croissants, the chocolate and strawberry pancakes and the strawberry juice are delicious! I tend to always choose the set breakfast with papaya, a basket of different breads with white cheese, jams, turkey ham, juice + hot drink…more link a brunch really! You can site both indoors and outdoors. If you happen to be around for lunch time, try the salads and soups! very nice!! And if you feel like having a sweet to take away with you, try the carrot and chocolate cake!
Address: Rua Farme de Amoedo 43. Ipanema
- Parque Laje in Jardim Botanico
No breakfast caffe beats the setting and view of this one here: located in the outdoors patio of a semi-in-ruins house surrounded by exuberant green and with a view from the feet of the Christ the Redeemer in the Corcovado Mountain. This place is worth it on its own. It has something boho-chic about it. Perhaps the location or perhaps the artistic flare. The breakfast can consist of a few traditional Brazilian cheese balls (pal de queijo) with a freshly squeezed juice while sitting on one of the stone benches around the swimming pool or a full brazilian breakfast (freshly squeezed juice, hot drink, bread basket with ham and white cheese, muesli on yogurt and papaya) seated on the caffe/restaurant outdoors seats. This is specially popular on Sunday for brunch. After the breakfast/ brunch, take the opportunity to walk around the natural park.
Address: Rua Jardim Botânico 414
- Confeiteria Colombo, Forte de Copacabana in Arpoador/Copacabana
What makes this caffe place special is being inside the Copacabana Fortress (Forte de Copacabana) overlooking the iconic Rio de Janeiro´s beach of Copacabana and the Sugar Loaf in the horizon. They have nice breakfast there but if you can’t make it for that early time, go in the afternoon, which is just as nice. Once inside, take the opportunity to walk to the end of the fortress and overlook Arpoador and beginning of Ipanema beach.
Address: Praça Coronel Eugênio Franco, 1
Enjoy Rio and your breakfast!! 🙂
